Information from recent meeting: Dec: Millbrook with PJ Paul Prosper:
PJ Paul Prosper will be working to resolve the beneficiaries issue with the full involvement of all Nova Scotia
Mi’kmaq and those who believe they have been excluded from exercising their rights as Nova Scotia Mi’kmaqThrough
the course of his work, Paul will be finding out the views, perspectives and experiences on the application of rights and
resulting benefits that the Mi’kmaq have in Nova Scotia and how those rights and benefits might be extended to those
who have been excluded. To resolve the issue of beneficiaries will require an open and wide dialogue. All agree that the beneficiaries
issue demands a Mi’kmaq solution. The Mi’kmaq Rights Initiative has one clear goal: To define, recognize and implement
our rights for the benefit of all Mi’kmaq in Nova Scotia.
There are many areas that the Initiative could affect, including:
Mi’kmaq rights to fish
Mi’kmaq rights to be involved in forestry
Mi’kmaq rights to land and resources
Mi’kmaq rights to real self-determination
The Mi’kmaq Rights Initiative is trying to make Aboriginal and treaty rights practical and useful for
the Mi’kmaq in Nova Scotia. So far, the Supreme Court of Canada, the highest court in the land, has confirmed that we
have rights to the fish and wildlife of Nova Scotia, and to provide for ourselves with these resources. Our rights are protected
by the Constitution of Canada, and they cannot be taken away by the Governments of Canada or the Government of Nova Scotia
or any of their departments, .
At this meeting/information session the following was discussed:
