Background

NSNWA was started in the early seventies

The Association consists of:

  •  President
  • 1st vice
  • 2nd vice
  • 3rd vice
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Life Time Elder Anges Potter

These are elected positions, and term is for two years.  We also have a provincial board which is formed of local presidents from the reserves in Nova Scotia who hold elections every two years.

The association is a member of the Native Women’s Association of Canada.

Our objectives are:

  • To assist native women to contribute ideas and skills to the social, culturally and economic development of the Mi’Kmaq society.
  • To encourage the native women to assume a more positive and active role in their rightful place in society.
  • To assist in the identification and stimulation of Mi"Kmaq culture, including arts, crafts, and cultural tradition and all other aspects of our Mi’Kmaq heritage.
  • To work with all levels of government to improve social, educational, and employment opportunities.

Through funding the Native Women have been able to address these issues and have held projects, workshops, and meetings. Through projects and training the Native Women’s Association has assisted and continues to assist women in Nova Scotia with helpful education and information that they may not have been able to access otherwise.

Such as through the hard work of the Human Resource Worker Linda Maloney:

She has provided many workshops across the province .

Interview skills training which is recent , where native women have the opportunity to learn proper ways of handling an interview,  they learn valuable tips and gain a skill that will enable them to be confident during the interview.

Linda has been with the Native Women for over  fifteen years now and she continues to reach women in need of training and  provide educational opportunities and employment  skills and we are very thankfull for her hard work.
